Oscar Confidence Pool 2017/2018 Results

March 08, 2018

T here’s a first time for everything! Yes, for the first time Trivia Club not only hosted an Oscar NIGHT Trivia event, and did some in The Hall at The Rec Room, but we also watched the 90th Academy Awards afterwards! Taking in all the awards festivities, the awards, and that one jet ski!

This year was also the first time that we held not one, but two different Oscar Pools, as a more traditional picks pool took place at The Rec Room! Those that watched live with us had the chance to take home a $100 gift card for The Rec Room as well as some movie passes for upcoming early spring popcorn fair! Bogdon T. of the Best Supporting Couple! picked 20 categories correctly and walked away with the prize! Congratulations to him, but remember there is a difference between an Oscar Pool and Trivia Club’s Oscar Confidence Pool! With an extra of unpredictability and game theory, the Confidence system saw yet another first this year…

2017/2018 is the first year that the person with the most POINTS, did not also have the most PICKS! Yes, that’s possible, because remember:

  1. Picks are made in the usual manner, and then...
  2. Those picks are ranked from 24 (most confident) to 1 (least confident).
  3. The highest possible score is a wonderfully round 300 points.
The winner is the person with the most POINTS, with the number of correct picks breaking any ties.

For our SIXTH annual Oscar Pool, and the fifth annual celebration of the Confidence Pool, the past winners include The Electric Mayhem's Saad K. who was our first Oscar Pool victor in 2012/2013 with 17 correct picks! The Electric BastardsMatthew S. won the first Oscar Confidence Pool in 2013/2014 with a still unmatched 22 correct picks for 290 points! In 2014/2015 it was Oliver D. who won our third Pool with 20 correct picks for 270 points! The Cunning StuntsMark P. won in 2015/2016 with 18 correct picks for 257 points and then Mark P. was the first person to repeat as Oscar Confidence Pool winner with 242 points on 17 correct picks in 2016/2017!

Now our results, in a finish that could have gone any one of FOUR ways, and really went down to the wire, with confidence winning the day... yes, the 2018 OSCAR CONFIDENCE POOL goes to...

For the first time, as we noted above, the most picks did not win our Confidence Pool! Though Rob M. finished with three less correct picks then Mark P., it was his Confidence that was key this year! Putting his heart behind Baby Driver for Film Editing did not even do him in, neither did picking Get Out for Best Picture! As the only participant to not lose double-digit points on an incorrect pick, Rob M. becomes the sixth winner of Trivia Club's Oscar Pool, proving without a shadow of a doubt that the M. stands for Moneyball!

2. Visual Effects - Blade Runner 2049
1. Best Picture - The Shape of Water

Our two-time Confidence Pool winner will not be making it a threepeat, proving how hard it is to threepeat with anything Trivia Club! Not for lack of picking though, as Mark P. would have won any traditional Oscar Pool with his 21 picks, three more then the three closest participants! Still, it was the higher ranking, compared to his competition, of the Documentary Feature and the two Short categories (traditionally very tough to nail down in any Pool), that made the four point difference this year between our winner and runner-up, giving Mark P. something to chase at the 91st Academy Awards!

James C. our reigning Summer Movie Wager winner, finished third in points off the strength of strong picks in the Documentary categories, but did not finish any higher thanks to not only Three Billboards being shut out of the Best Picture win, but also his 17 points, of 31 total lost, which were lost on Song/Score! Music was not in tune for this Unusual Suspect!

For Peter M., who has continued to improve his standing in each of the four years that he was competed in our Oscar Pool, 25 of the 41 points that were lost on confidence ranking were in the Documentary categories. Though he finished tied for second in correct picks, he finished fourth in points. Peter M. is also the only member of the top four this year who did not correctly pick the Best Actor category, though he rightfully ranked it low. Also ranking low was his correct Best Picture choice in what became an unpredictable category in the final month of Oscar voting!
