Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 43x10: Sam Rockwell & Halsey

January 15, 2018

Saturday Night Live Fantasy League presented by Trivia Club, is a Fantasy League like no other. Like Fantasy Football for the comedy geek, participants draft cast members and prospective hosts before the start of the season and then are awarded points based of their performance through a scoring system. For additional points, before the start of each episode participants can guess which two songs they think the musical guest will perform. Since the beginning, this television institution has become the first step in the major leagues of comedy stardom, and with over forty seasons of familiar traditions, we’ve found a way to add math to comedy and somehow make that a fun game to play. Play at home,  or keep tabs on how we’re doing in our Saturday Night Live Fantasy League!

Though this return episode,  first of 2018, automatically was catnip for film nerds in the form of first-time SNL host Sam Rockwell… the execution left a little to be desired overall. In turns like the Ed Norton episode from season 39, Sam Rockwell brought an exciting energy to the show and proved a game host but was still a square peg for the show. Rockwell is a Not Ready for Primetime kind of Player, for a show that has been Primetime for the Peacock Network since 1993.  So it’s no surprise that the edgier the material the better things worked out,  and maybe it’s the current mix of the cast, but the My Drunk Boyfriend pre-tape was both the best sketch of the night and also endlessly uncomfortable and spot on… ending with a capper that featured the one-two punch of Heidi Gardner playing her current ace part followed by a never more unlikable Alex Moffat (including any time he talks about that boat he just bought)!

Jessica Chastain will be hosting next Saturday,  with musical guest and rare singer/YouTuber double-threat (like our very own Megan McKay) Troye Sivan! Though she went undrafted (we forgot to run our post holiday host draft, FYI) I’m almost as excited to see what Chastain will do at 30 Rock, as I was when Sam Rockwell was announced. As a less proven comedian, this episode can only reveal what the Oscar nominee is capable of. And just when you think it’s the serious actor time of the year, musical guest Chris Stapleton will come to SNL on January 27th in TWO WEEKS, with host and The Ignorant Sluts draft pick… Will Ferrell!
