Minding the P's
& Q's of SNL
QUALITY: Octavia
Spencer was a solid host, as to be expected with the Drug Names Arbitration
sketch being a high point, though also standing her own in a different take on
the always fun “impersonation carousel” sketch that finally showed just how
amazing Melissa Villaseñor can be for the show.
PROBLEMATIC: Cecily
Strong was involved in not one but two low points of the episode for me. As the
straight person to a slew of creepy male twists and an inevitable “bitch”, as the “Girl At A Bar”. To follow it up
with a cringe worthy white guilt sketch, that plays to the bad “trashy” side of
Cecily’s comedic tricks? Yes, a bad episode for Cecily Strong unfortunately.
QUALITY: Randomly appearing Kelly-Anne Conway! Oh how I love it when Saturday Night Live does something new, and
not only because I’m paying attention so much to the minutia it can really make
an episode stand out for me.
QUALITY: Weekend
Update had it’s highs for a change, so I’m giving it a Q, even though they
segment seemed to bottom out and lose it’s momentum after an actually solid
Subway DNA joke. When Che is making not one but two misguided jokes about
women, and on top of that adlibbing where he really shouldn’t… there’s only so
much that can be done.

PROBLEMATIC: Father
John Misty’s mustache.
PROBLEMATIC: Damn it, Pitchfork if you’re going to give us the first song before the show… you have to do it before 11:07!

The on and off again nature of late winter in the Saturday Night
Live schedule is never kind to the writing staff, I find. Shows can either hit or miss, with no
momentum being added either way from the prior episode. Back from a few weeks
off, after the biggest episode of the last couple of seasons, is a victory lap
for Octavia Spencer’s award season run which didn’t take advantage of her world
nearly as well as it could have! Next week we’ve got the sixteenth episode of
the season, welcoming the newest person into the Five Timers Club (and the
fourth woman after Candice Bergen, Drew Barrymore, and Tina Fey)… nope, not
Melissa McCarthy… SCARLETT JOHANSSON!
Johansson, on the show to promote Ghost In The Shell, will be
joined by musical guest Lorde, and well done to all those teams who drafted the
Avenger! We’ll see you back again at the .CA next week for the break down of
that episode and it’s impact on the SNL Fantasy League groups!
