Oscar Confidence Pool 2016/2017 Invitation

January 29, 2017

I t's that time of year again! The Award Season is going full steam, and with the Award Season comes to the Academy Awards, celebrating a certain section of "Oscar worthy" movies! Of course, this label has become more and more contentious each and every year, growing to a fever pitch in the 2010's, starting with The King's Speech winning against a crowded field of more interesting films, The Artist using the power of silence to notch the rare feet of a largely foreign film winning against a relatively weak field, and the whiplash of the Best Picture being Argo to 12 Years a Slave to Birdman... and that's before we get to last year and #OscarSoWhite!

Still, we watch movies because we love the art, we're entertained by those who are damn good at their jobs, and we watch the Oscars because we either love even the air of competition or we just love the spectacle of award shows. 2016 was a GREAT YEAR for movies, and the nominations for the Oscars proved a great year for La La Land... and since I really enjoyed La La Land, that puts me in a good mood for Trivia Club's 2017 Oscar Confidence Pool!

What is an Oscar Confidence Pool, you might ask? It's simple enough.

  1. Picks are made in the usual manner, and then...
  2. Those picks are ranked from 24 (most confident) to 1 (least confident).
  3. The highest possible score is a wonderfully round 300 points.
The winner is the person with the most POINTS, with the number of correct picks breaking any ties.

This is our FIFTH ANNUAL Oscar Pool, and the fourth Oscar Confidence Pool! Saad K. was our first Oscar Pool victor in 2012/2013 with 17 correct picks! Matthew S. won the first Oscar Confidence Pool in 2013/2014 with a still unmatched 22 correct picks for 290 points! In 2014/2015 it was Oliver D. who won our third Pool with 20 correct picks for 270 points! Our reigning Oscar Confidence Pool winner is long time Trivia Club competitor Mark P. who won in 2015/2016 with 18 correct picks for 257 points!

An added wrinkle for our Fifth Annual Oscar Pool will be the involvement of teams! As well as an individual award, we will be giving an award to the TEAM with the most points! When you submit your ballot you can submit under a specific team name as well, and the TOP FIVE scores for that team will be added together and weighed against other teams! Trivia Club is, after all a group affair, so it seemed only fitting!

Ballots can be submitted electronically or in person, at our Trivia Club live events where we will also have paper ballots to fill out! You can also download the PDF provided below. Best luck, may your confidence be the award winning key!
