Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 41x21: Fred Armisen & Courtney Barnett
May 27, 2016
QUALITY: Just when I start acting like a jerk, SNL proves me wrong! Though Fred Armisen is still expected to pop up in a guest appearance again in the future, I would be shocked to see him host again. Not that he didn't do a wonderful job this week for the Season 41 Finale! I should have known that the writers would have been aces, and that ample guests coming into play with an old cast member would help in softening any problems that I had with Armisen before the episode. Three seasons on, in doing this, and I still get taken by surprise!
PROBLEMATIC: The dream of the 90's is alive is Courtney Barnett! This isn't me even making fun of the fact that she appears to be a member of Super Friends going solo, it's being sad about the fact that we didn't get more Courtney Barnett. Imagine the number of kids that would have started bands!
QUALITY: While on the topic of starting something, it's as if they saved the best for last and gave the money position in the episode (about 20 minutes in) to the sketch of the season, and what some are calling the sketch of this generation of cast members. Hard to argue with that. Farewell Mr. Bunting, and those that worked on it deserve all the props!
PROBLEMATIC: This IS the Finale for the year, so we'll to breaking down the final episode and the last chance for points. It was a DOOZY of an episode. I'll say up front that the points on display are a big story for this week. And it's cast-wide! So enjoy the big send-off, but don't forget that you are all invited back next season, and also invite your friends to partake as well!

The Hartman Group holds a special place in heart, I'm not going to lie. And it's not just because I'm a member as well as being the commissioner, but I'm sure that doesn't hurt either! These are most of the people that have been involved in all three seasons of Saturday Night Live Fantasy League! A few more dot the rest of our fair League, but these teams are the lion share. The Ignorant Sluts take the Hartman Group's G.E. Smith Award, with the most Song Choice points, naturally. War Horse Can Dance, unsurprisingly as well, is the Group's Baldwin & Martin Award winner, with the most Host Points! The Billion Dollar Murrays are the Eddie Murphy Award winners of the Group, surprisingly!
This season also brings a few firsts to the teams competing for the Phil Hartman Trophy, at the moment the Saturday Night Live Fantasy League's only physical trophy! For the first time, a NEW Hartman Trophy winner was crowned. They're also the first team to win the prize who began playing after Season 39. Which is to say it wasn't the Billion Dollar Murrays, runner-up for the third consecutive year within the Group (thanks in part to ZERO Host Points) and officially becoming the Buffalo Bill Murrays, this year's Phil Hartman Trophy winner is also the first to win the award WITHOUT the help of Kate McKinnon (or Taran Killam for that matter) but wouldn't you know it, Beck Bennett finds himself on our well regarded Trophy once again...
CONGRATULATIONS to WAR HORSE CAN DANCE and their owner Megan McKay! She didn't mean to draft Ariana Grande as a Host (so she says), but since that episode, War Horse Can Dance was in the lead and did not look back! Not even as Billion Dollar Murrays made a late push and The Not Ready for First Place Players and Desolate Isle faltered! War Horse Can Dance also finished as the top scoring G8 (Group of Eight) Team, narrowly edging out the top team of the Myers Group, thanks to a season clinching Host of the finale episode, in Fred Armisen!

EPISODE TWENTY-ONE TOTAL 213
In our second year of teams competing for the Gilded Radner, much like in the Hartman Group, we saw the former Champion quickly fall out of contention. Yes, this would not be a season in which Three-Legged Jeans would repeat as Gilded Radner winner! Lil Baby Aidy would have a strong season, but would lose much needed momentum near the end of the season, though still earning the Group's Eddie Murphy Award honors for most episodes with the high score! Skanky Little Prostitutes would however grab that much needed momentum that their closest competition had lost, and nab the Baldwin & Martin Award, for Host Points within the Group! Not only that, Skanky Little Prostitutes would also take the G.E. Smith Award within the Group, grabbing the most points for Song Choices and proving the importance of activity throughout the season and not just during the drafts!
The Radner Group would welcome a new team in Kebert Xela to their fold, but it would be one of the many returning teams within the Group that took the Gilded Radner home! Rising up from 11th place in Season 40, the SKANKY LITTLE PROSTITUTES and their team owner Mike are now Gilded Radner winners, CONGRATULATIONS!

EPISODE TWENTY-ONE TOTAL 153
The Myers Group saw a diverse mix of four first season teams, two second year teams, as well as two three season teams, bringing the widest range of teams together in the entire League! Earlier in Season 41, it looked to be the two Season 39 teams of the Group, Dan Akroyd Rage and Suck It Trebek, who would be fighting for first place! No one would have suspected Organic Wifi however, to grab three hosts in two episodes!
Yes, with just those two episodes (plus additional guest appearances by Tina Fey), Organic Wifi easily took the Group's Baldwin & Martin Award! Organic Wifi would also grab the Eddie Murphy Award (and Anthony's Joe Pesci Showmanship would top the finale, assuring that every team would lead at least one episode!), breaking the episode high score-tie with Not A Strong Swimmer, thanks to those very same host enabled 200+ point nights! Organic Wifi would ALMOST go one to also take the G.E. Smith Award within the Group, but that same quiet rivalry with Not A Strong Swimmer would see Not A Strong Swimmer win the Group Song Choice battle by three points. Yes, the placement of Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go To The Party and Pedestrian At Best. A Song Choice swap that would ALSO be the difference between third and fourth for Not A Strong Swimmer and Suck It Trebek!
If all that wasn't a great lesson in the importance of Hosts Picks and Song Choices, think of it this way. ORGANIC WIFI, and our second-season participant Andrew K. are WAYNE'S WORLD CHAMPIONS! And why? Well, Kate McKinnon for one, but also thanks to more then 500 additional points in combined Host and Song Choices points! That's enough to take him from what would have been fifth, all the way up to first place! Well played, well earned!

EPISODE TWENTY-ONE TOTAL 241
The Farley Group was our other collection of diverse experience levels, bringing a third season participant together with a second year participant, and four first time Fantasy Leaguers. It proved quite the competitive Group, likely our second most competitive Group, that at one time during the season saw five of the six teams in contention to take The Little Coat home as their very own. Speaking of awards, Effie Villalopolus' Professional Complainers took home the Group's Baldwin & Martin Award with the help of Tina Fey and our finale host Fred Armisen! Miss Swan's Lowered Expectations barely hung onto the G.E. Smith Award, within the Group with the lowest average song choice picks (let along points), though This Team Has Everything did put up a late season fight for the prize! Murry'd With Children would take the Eddie Murphy Award, on the strength of getting the episode high score in five of the last eight episodes of the season!
Breaking away with the late lead in the season is also what solidified Murry'd With Children their first Group victory! CONGRATULATIONS to MURRY'D WITH CHILDREN and their owner Johnny H. on winning the first Little Coat! As we stated last episode, think of it as an ill-fitting version of the Green Jacket of The Masters!

EPISODE TWENTY-ONE TOTAL 276
Kevin K. is someone that we'll remember as the first person who came to US about joining the Saturday Night Live Fantasy League, and luckily he wasn't the last! Unluckily for his Group however, The Night Crawlerz had an exceptional season! With a nearly 400 point victory by the end of Season 41, it's an unprecedented victory for the second-season team over a Group of more then able first and second year teams! The Night Crawlerz took the G.E. Smith, Baldwin & Martin, and Eddie Murphy Awards for the Group, though Total Bastard Airlines certainly put up a fight for the Baldwin & Martin Award, and both Harry Cary's BBQ Moon Ribs and Nuni and the Hair Chair (with the edge going to Nuni) were certainly competitive in the Song Choice category!
Even Taran Killam's late season slump could not slow down THE NIGHT CRAWLERZ and their owner Kevin K., as they took home their first Group victory and the inaugural Samurai John's Sword of Destiny! All teams next season will not be mistaking how dangerous they are, as they're also more then 150 points atop of any other G6 (Group of Six) Team!

EPISODE TWENTY-ONE TOTAL 225
It was with added interest that we watched the Poehler Group this season, as they were the only Group of participants that were entirely new the experience of Saturday Night Live Fantasy League! In this largely mid-western collection of participants, we also were pleased to see the closest race across the board! Only 42 points separated first and third places, and only 17 points lay between our eventual runner-up and the first winner of the Weekend Warrior Award!
Before we reveal that winner, however, well played to the Lazy Sunfeys! There's was a team that remained competitive, and perhaps even became more competitive as we continued later into the season and it's thanks to their namesake that they won the Group's Baldwin & Martin Award! Heather From Work took home the Poehler Group's G.E. Smith Award for Song Choices, once again proving the importance of every single one of those 135 Song Choice points! International Nasty Girl$ may have ended the season in fourth place, but not for lack of an impressive season! Especially the first half of SNL41, which helped in them winning the tie-breaker over Haders to the Left to take home the Eddie Murphy Award!
None of these above mentioned Group award winners, however, won the Weekend Warrior Award! That prize goes to HADERS TO THE LEFT! Well played, to Samantha L. and her team, which included the impressive duo of Kate McKinnon and Taran Killam! It's a testament to her competition that her victory wasn't a forgone conclusion at the start of the season, and certainly another example of proving this writer wrong while also leaving the League entertained!
WEEKEND WARRIOR AWARD FINAL STANDINGS (after Episode 41x21)
- Haders to the Left – 3283

- International Nasty Girl$ - 3074

And now...
Your Saturday Night Live
Fantasy League-WIDE Awards!
Eddie Murphy Award for Leader of the Pack
Final Standings (after Episode 41x21)
Named after the comedian who out-paced his fellow cast
members by such a large margin that he still stands as the only cast member to
host while part of the cast. To the team that has attained episode high-score
in their group the most amount of times. Tiebreaker is the combined points in
which they won over the closest team per highest-score episode (win difference).
1. The Night Crawlerz - w/ 9 episodes (273 pts win difference)
2. Murry’d With Children - w/ 8 episodes
3.
Lil Baby Aidy - w/ 7 episodes
4.
Skanky Little Prostitutes - w/ 6 episodes
5.
Billion Dollar Murrays - w/ 5 episodes
5.
Haders to the Left - w/ 5 episodes
5.
International Nasty Girl$ - w/ 5 episodes
5.
The Not Ready For First Place Players - w/ 5 episodes
5.
Not a Strong Swimmer - w/ 5 episodes
5. Organic Wifi - w/ 5 episodes
Even with the help of very special guest star Jason Sudeikis, it was Fred Armisen that would block Murry'd With Children from topping another episode in the Farley Group, while adding a victory lap to The Night Crawlerz season in the Belushi Group! Ultimately the 273 win diff. wasn't even necessary for The Night Crawlerz as they take home the Eddie Murphy Award for Leader of the Pack!
Baldwin & Martin Award for Most with the Host
Standings (after Episode 41x21)
Named after the two men that have hosted Saturday Night Live
more often any other other, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin! To the team with the
most combined points from Prospective Hosts drafted. Tiebreakers are total
number of hosts, number of episode with host points, number of guest hosts, in
that order.
1.
Organic Wifi - 357 (Tina Fey as a host & guest twice, Amy Poehler as a host, Adam Driver as a host)
2. War Horse Can Dance - 347
3. Skanky Little Prostitutes - 323
4. The Night Crawlerz - 287
5. Effie Villalopolus' Professional Complainers - 259
6. Total Bastard Airlines – 227
7. The Vondrukes – 211
8. Lil Baby Aidy - 203
9. Murry'd With Children - 190
10. Desolate Isle - 188
Two episodes, one to end 2015 and one to begin 2016 (and two additional guest appearances from Tina Fey, ahem) gave Organic Wifi the Baldwin & Martin Award! It's fitting however that an award named after two hosts, also saw Organic Wifi go two for two in the first TWO HOST episode in quite a few seasons! A pipe dream that paid off, just in time for Christmas! War Horse Can Dance ended up finishing just ten points behind their fellow G8 team, off the strength of Tina Fey once again, and fellow hosts Ariana Grande, and Fred Armisen, not to mention a Musical Guest sketch appearance from Kanye West!
G.E. Smith Award for Musical Guest Excellence
Standings (after Episode 41x21)
Named after Saturday Night Live’s legendary former Musical
Director. To the team that has gained the most song choice points by seasons
end. Tiebreakers are most second songs, most first songs, and overall correct
song choices, in that order.
1.
The Ignorant Sluts - 197 (1 missed episode, 15 first songs, 11 second songs, 32 total songs)
2. Skanky Little Prostitutes - 175
3. Billion Dollar Murrays - 170
4. Not A Strong Swimmer – 149
5. Organic Wifi - 147
6.
The Dark, Clenched Hole of Evil - 141
7.
War Horse Can Dance - 138
8.
Heather From Work – 135
9.
Desolate isle – 132
10.
The Night Crawlerz - 128
As was noted last episode, The Ignorant Sluts, free from having to repeat The Hartman Trophy once again, were able to lock up the G.E. Smith Award an episode early! Skanky Little Prostitutes broke the tie for second place, because even though Billion Dollar Murrays got the first song choice correct in the season finale, Skanky Little Prostitutes were one of only two teams to get the second song choice correct! The Night Crawlerz were that other team, and in earning 15 points in the finale, knock The Team You Wish You Hadn't Started A Conversation With At A Party and their 122 song choice points, out of 10th place!
And with that, let's all get together for a jam band-styled final sketch, shall we?

LAST EPISODE'S HOST: DRAKE
SEE ALL YOU WONDERFUL FOLKS NEXT SEASON!
We're already looking at new things we can add to Saturday Night Live Fantasy League next season. Whether it's Brian's idea of giving points for eating food during a sketch (CHECK!) or the potential of adding additional choices for each episode, not necessarily for points, but at least for additional bragging rights (Meg Ann, thanks for the heads up idea)!
For those curious, Tina Fey is the Host who produced the most points this season, bringing the teams that drafted her 166 points! Amy Poehler's 116 points along-side Tina Fey is the single episode season-high! Kate McKinnon produced 1,084 points for her teams, making her the Season 41 MVP to the surprise of no one, especially after Taran Killam late season slump left him with 978 total points produced! McKinnon gained more points then any cast member in eight episodes. Beck Bennett's 91 points in the season finale is a season-high episode total.
Congratulations one more time to Hartman Trophy winner War Horse Can Dance, Gilded Radner winner Skanky Little Prostitutes, Wayne's World Champion and Baldwin & Martin Award winner Organic Wifi, Little Coat wearer Murry'd With Children, Samurai John's Sword of Destiny holder and Eddie Murphy Award winner The Night Crawlerz, Weekend Warrior Award winner Haders to the Left, and G.E. Smith Award winner The Ignorant Sluts! Enjoy these annual accolades, put 'em on your shelf!
