Minding the P's
& Q's of SNL
QUALITY: America
has been getting touchy about being consoled, so I was nervous about America’s Dad giving the ol’ U.S. of A. a little
bit of advice and a pick me up in the cold open… and you’d think that America would never get
into this mess with Tom Hanks as their dad, but then again…
QUALITY: Tom Hanks
was a fantastic host. I don’t need to tell you this. The fact that he’s had a
quiet last decade on the show is more to the point where he was at a different
point in his career, and had to step away from doing a Saturday Night Live once
or twice a year, for a while. It’s great to see him on the show though,
interacting with a fresh cast and throwing to the Musical Guest, in what can
only be called her “mechanical bull” phase. Sponsored by Bud Light. Back to
Hanks though, and enough catty musical commentary… from David S. Pumpkins to
Doug on Black Jeopardy, the writing was weird and wonderful and proved that as
well as getting back into that politically commentary niche that they lost last
year when Trump hosted, this generation of the cast is following Kate
McKinnon’s lead and getting sooo weird,
in the best possible way.
QUALITY: With
Larry David on retainer, it’s only a matter of time before David S. Pumpkins
and Kevin Roberts team-up… right? Please?
PROBLEMATIC: If I’m
going to be disappointed with anything, it will be the flat Sully sketch, but
hey I understand where it’s coming from. Hanks is always going to be game, and
it’s a fun riff on the idea of a heroic pilot thinking maybe a little too much
of himself.
PROBLEMATIC: I’m not
asking a lot when it comes to sketch continuity, and it certainly isn’t as bad
as the reoccurring grossness of the “Hot For Teacher” sketch last year, but if
we’re going to bring back America’s Funniest Pets, at least give me a callback
to Ron Howard taking over for Adam Driver’s Finn Raynal-Beads! Or at the very
least, don’t act like Joelle LaRue and Noelle LeSoup are here for the first
time. I know my America’s Funniest animal shows! Also, Stefon married Seth
Myers, so don’t tell me continuity isn’t important in sketch comedy.

With Tom Hanks putting together an excellent episode, teams also
continued to find out who their aces might be. Cecily Strong has proven to be
the new Taran Killam, points-wise at least, becoming something of the 1B ace of
the cast alongside Kate McKinnon. The Hartman Group also took part in a
Featured Redraft, between the third and fourth episodes, the first of its kind
in our four years of Saturday Night Live Fantasy League! What will this do to
their chances as the season continues? We’ll certainly have to wait and see!
Benedict Cumberbatch was announced as the Host for the fifth
episode of the season, on November 5th! The musical guest on the
night will be Solange, no doubt making it a hotly anticipate episode! Yes,
after four years of being selected in more or less every host draft available,
the Cumberbet has paid off with Dr. Strange rolling into theatre’s in less then
a month! For ample Dr. Strange chat, check out our comic book podcast on the
Trivia Club Network, The Panel (hurray for cross-promotion!) a Podcast To
Astooooonish!
Alec Baldwin continued to be the best possible additional cast
member, for the teams that have drafted him. Even if it doesn’t continue with
such fervor after the election, Baldwin has still been able to say “LIVE FROM
NEW YORK…!” at the start of each of the first four episodes, gaining 60 points
from just that line of dialogue alone. When these points were first instituted
four seasons ago, I never expected that Alec would do his best to break the
game. A few fun firsts for the season in this past episode, include Aidy Bryant
running through a large glass window for points and for the very first time we
have puke points, the infamous fluids ruling of 2016,
getting points for Cecily Strong!
