Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 42x03: Emily Blunt & Bruno Mars

PROBLEMATIC: The cold
opens have been so good this season,
I’m worried that there won’t be as much fun to be had once Donald Trump
is no longer culturally relevant (the best possible worry that one can have), when Alec Baldwin no longer has to say
“LIVE FROM NEW YORK…!” (which, I suppose, worries the five people who drafted
him), but really this has been
Saturday Night Live making gold out of the 24K magic (we’ll get to that) that
they have been given these last few weeks. With the election on November 35th
(or November 8th, if you’re not a Trump supporter) there was finite
fun to be had to begin with.
QUALITY: Saturday
Night Live is bringing the strange this season. It must be the new Head
Writers, that helps explain this more then just the usual new blood in the
writers room, but from the continued excellence of Melania Moments, to Who’s
Afraid of Virginia Hamster?, not
to mention a new commercial classic with CHONK, the writing has been weird in
the best possible way.
QUALITY: Emily
Blunt was an ace host, like you kinda expected she’d be. One of the minds
behind Jimmy Fallon’s best bit (her, John Krasinski, and Stephen Merchant, are
the driving forces behind Lip Synch Kareoke, making THAT the best possible
dinner party), it’s fantastic to see Blunt have so much fun on Saturday Night.
She had great chemistry with the cast, and dove into the writing, which proved
steadier through out then last week.
PROBLEMATIC: Oh, how I
(and Not A Strong Swimmer) love that
Great British Bake-Off, and even if the comedy is in putting the American
personality disorder into such a friendly competitive reality TV show… keep
those personality problems out of my British baking show! My love for seeing
Sue Perkins and Merry Berry lampooned on SNL is out-weighed by the purposeful
ugliness of Cecily Strong and Emily Blunt’s characters.
PROBLEMATIC: 24K Magic
was a ton of fun, Bruno Mars is a capital “P” Performer, and I loved the change
room to the studio floor portion of the first song… that was new, exciting, and
soooo full of energy! Which made the fixed move to the stage, and then entirety
of the second song on the stage just feel that much flatter. Big shiny XXIV’s
will not distract me from the fact that you gave me something cool… and then
TOOK IT AWAY!

As you may have noticed, we have introduced a stats table for each
Group that will bookend that episodes points breakdown with the fancy new
banner images! It was extra work, but fun work that will only support the nerd
portion of this Fantasy League (that, sure, didn’t need any help)! If you think
we’re missing anything, stat-wise, let us know. If you love the look of it, you

Emily Blunt proved to be the highest scoring Host of the year so
far, while Alec Baldwin continues to be the gift that keeps on giving! To put
into perspective how much of a boost Baldwin has been to his teams, even in his limited appearances he is
the fourth highest scoring cast member over these first three episodes and he’s
only two points behind Beck Bennett. Our next episode is next week, in a rare
fourth week in a row it will be Tom Hanks hosting with musical guest Lady Gaga!
It is Tom Hank’s ninth episode as Host, moving him past Chevy Chase as the
fourth hostingest host of all-time for SNL, and within one of Buck Henry for
third all-time.
