Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 42x05: Benedict Cumberbatch & Solange
November 06, 2016
Minding the P's
& Q's of SNL
QUALITY: Benedict
Cumberbatch is the solid kind of Saturday Night Live host that we all expected
he would be. It was excellent to see him pretty quickly playing into the
strange (pun not intended) nature of his sex symbol statice, what with his
deeply British looks almost added to that gravitas and charm that has been his
M.O. Beck Bennett hosting “Why Is Benedict Cumberbatch Hot?” was aces.
PROBLEMATIC: "Office
Hours" and the return of good natured yet wonderfully dumb Chad was a great
extension from the pool boy debut of the character last season, once again
showing the importance of changing the setting for a reoccurring character.
It’s what makes the return of Gema all the more frustrating. I’m not asking you
to take Cecily Strong’s character on the road, but if she’s going to keep
meeting the same couple over and over again then for the sake of not pulling me
out of the sketch either have her recognize them, have them recognize her, or
change the couple! If you’re expecting return viewers, a little continuity goes
a long way.
QUALITY: "Meeting
with Mr. Shaw" was classic 10 to 1 gold.
QUALITY: It can be
safely stated that Beck Bennett, as an evident Chicago Cubs fan, is living his
best life.
QUALITY: Also,
just an added note on Bobby and Pete giving Mr. Shaw a hug during Goodnights.
Bravo.

Because the possible series finale of the United States of America on November 8th wasn't enough, Saturday Night Live has been swinging for the fences when it comes to hosts! To lead into November we had Tom Hanks return for the first time in a decade to join the season 42 cast at 30 Rock! Then, to follow up Hanks, we get Cumberbatch... who was no doubt the most drafted host in our Fantasy League, season after season, group after group.
Together, these two host picks have shifted the momentum of most every group in our Saturday Night Live Fantasy League. Everyone who hasn't picked them, are now forced to play catch-up. On top of that, with Donald Trump revealing the dirt worst in American political discourse, we've also been treated to Alec Baldwin putting in a tour de force performance, which has gifted several teams with an additional 200+ points and counting!
And just to reward us all, for making it through the last 15 months of bullshit, etc., is... and let me catch my breath, because I'm still not convinced this is real, even after the hand-written name cards on the cork board... and the title card on Saturday night...
HOLY SHIT, DAVE CHAPPELLE IS HOSTING SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE NEXT WEEK!
Of course I fell in love with The Chappelle Show, and like all of you, I owned the first two seasons and the third almost season on DVD. It might be the last true gasp of the DVD, before we even knew it, and it made Dave Chappelle a multi-millionaire... who rightfully didn't want to deal with... everything?
It's insane on a career level that Dave Chappelle is hosting SNL, when I still distinctly remember a time when I knew him to be fully and unequivocally retired. Do not cross go. It's even more insane on a style level that the man responsible for... well... let's start with Clayton Bigsby (like Chappelle did), will be doing sketch comedy again on Saturday Night Live. What will that even look like? All the reasons we need to make it through to November 12th, America, AND with musical guests A TRIBE CALLED QUEST!

I was going to talk about Bobby Moynihan joining Alex Moffat, and Vanessa Bayer on the DNP list... but I need to lie down. Don't touch a damn thing until Saturday!
