Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 44x02: Awkwafina & Travis Scott
October 08, 2018
Saturday Night Live Fantasy League presented by Trivia Club, is a
Fantasy League like no other. Like Fantasy Football for the comedy nerd,
participants draft cast members and prospective hosts before the start of the
season and then are awarded points based of their performance through a scoring system. For additional points, before the start of each episode participants
can guess which two songs they think the musical guest will perform. Since the
beginning, this television institution has become the first step in the major
leagues of comedy stardom, and with over forty seasons of familiar traditions,
we’ve found a way to add math to comedy and somehow make that a fun game to
play. No seriously. You’re welcome.

Thank you to Rob M. of
Hunter the Hungries Gotta Eat for breaking down the points of this week’s
episode! Next episode will have the points broken down by Matthew S. of The Ignorant Sluts, and of course we will have the
first trio of episodes in Season 44 concluding with host Seth Myers, along with
musical guest Paul Simon! It will no doubt be an alumni-heavy episode (give me
Poehler and/or Moynihan on Update and I’ll be over the moon), after a wild premiere both
on and off camera, and a straight forward Awkwafina-hosted episode this week
that really could have been slotted anywhere during the year.
Awkwafina proved a good host, and a welcome Asian-American face in
this comedy institution! Her Lucy Liu anecdote in the opening monologue had me tearing up. As
a white male I regularly forget just how lucky I am to get the representation
in media that I haven’t earned. Lucy Liu
and Jackie Chan, who both hosted in the year 2000, are the only other Asian
hosts in Saturday Night Live’s history. This coupled with Nasim Pedrad, Fred
Armisen, and Rob Schneider being your only cast alumni with an Asian heritage
to speak of, only makes the spotlight on the problem more glaring (when two out
of three things include Armisen and Schneider when you’re talking about
ANYTHING… woof). As noted above this episode wasn’t spectacular, but proves
that even an average episode of Saturday Night Live is still an entertaining
one.
Season six of the Saturday Night Live Fantasy League is also
trying something new, as you might have noticed! As the commissioner of this
League, I won’t be the only one breaking down the points. The entire Hartman
Group will be rotating through episodes and as long as it all goes to plan you
will see each of the seven people who take part in these posts breakdown the
points for three episodes! See you next week for Seth Myers and Paul Simon!
After that episode the Hartman Group will then have our Featured Draft,
or as we like to call it The Elvis Costello! Will Ego end up on a team, and how
many cast members will shuffle around as we race to get the shockingly
underrated Kyle Mooney on our teams! Look for THOSE redrafting cast changes on
the fourth episode breakdown!
