Summer Movie Wager 2016 RESULTS

September 19, 2016

T he 2016 Summer Movie Wager came down to the wire! On Labor Day weekend, not only did Jason Bourne jump past both X-Men: Apocalypse and Star Trek Beyond to become the fifth highest grossing movie of the summer, but the battle for 9 and 10 was truly the deciding factor of 2016, when all was said and done. Remember, if we had a tie this is how the Summer Movie Wager tie-breakers work: 1) getting 1 and/or 10 correct, 2) the number of dead-on picks from 2 thru 10, 3) the number of picks only one spot away, 4) the number of picks only two spots away, 5) most correct picks including Dark Horses, and 6) box office of highest pick not in the summer’s top 10! If after this, everything is still tied, then the winner’s trophy will be shared!
Summer Movie Box Office (as of 09/05/16)
1. Finding Dory
2. Captain America: Civil War
3. The Secret Life of Pets
4. Suicide Squad
5. Jason Bourne
6. X-Men: Apocalypse
7. Star Trek Beyond
8. Central Intelligence
9. Ghostbusters
10. The Legend of Tarzan
Throughout July and August, from our prognosticating point of view, we imagined that the 2016 Summer Movie Wager would be decided by the 1 and 2 spot, and the fact that by and large our competitors saw Captain America: Civil War taking the top spot over Finding Dory! When that was not to be, whoever chose Finding Dory as the number one movie of the summer looked to be in control! The Summer Movie Wager wasn't settled until Labor Day Weekend had finished however, and the top two teams had chosen Captain America: Civil War as their number one movie!

It was only after we got the returns on Monday, September the 5th, that James C. lost to Stephane de S. by less then half a million dollars at the box office, when the new Ghostbusters movie moved from 10th to 9th, surpassing The Legend of Tarzan! This took six points away form James C. of Cardinal Rule's The Unusual Suspects, and awarded nine points points to Stephane de S. who had participated in Trivia Club at Cardinal Rule the week before our Summer Movie Wager began, at the end of April and beginning of May!

Stephane de S. truly earned that 2016 Summer Movie Wager trophy, correctly picking nine of the top ten movies. He was one spot off on five of the films, and spot on as noted with the last two films on the list, with the other two on his dark horse list. His 60 points is also the most earned by any participant in this Extra Curricular game's history, four more then the previous high mark set by Patrick D. in 2014!

The film that was not on anyone's list was Central Intelligence, the early summer action comedy was not on a single top ten list nor was it anyones dark horse pick, but it finished the summer as the eighth highest grossing movie. Never ever bet against The Rock. Check. Independence Day Resurgence was the highest ranking bust, across the board, while Alice Through The Looking Glass was also on every top ten list save for one, and even then it was a dark horse selection. Which isn't to say that the top teams of this year's summer movie didn't do well with a tough set of films, as the top five participants all gained more points then last year's winner Alex B.! After this year's runner-up The Unusual Suspects' James C. are two people tied for third, Joel L. of the M. Night Shaym-Aliens, who was hurt most by Angry Birds, and Brittany E. of We H8 Brittany, who picked nine movies in the top ten but was hurt most by the order of the nine!

Congrats once more to our NEW Summer Movie Wager winnner, Stephane de S. We look forward to mailing you that Summer Movie Wager trophy to Montreal...
