Socratic Shield: The Search, as of mid-July 2016

July 15, 2016

Having crossed the half-way mark of 2016, The Search for the Socratic Shield continues to take shape! The Socratic Shield is a way to celebrate the top performing teams within a calendar year, not quite an annual award like the Golden VCR, Hitchens Cup, or Top Dawg Trophy… yet still a celebration of annual excellence! The upper echelon of winning teams features all the familiar team names - it's a TOP TEN of teams who have won multiple Golden VHS with a multi-team tie-up in the middle of the proceedings! Also a NEW TEAM, since our first Search in mid-May, has entered the fray as the Biggest Mover in the past two months!

Ladies and gentlemen, grab those pens and write your team name on the slips of paper: The Search for the 2016 Socratic Shield continues!

BIGGEST MOVER: Lt. Dance, with three Golden VHS Championship wins at Lou Dawgs!

MOVEMENT: STEADY
Cunning Stunts
LOU DAWGS (8), CARDINAL RULE (2), HITCH (1)
The only team to win a Triple Crown so far in 2016, strengthen their lead! Though The Stunts faced fierce competition through the remainder of May and June, they were able to break out of a prolonged (for them) drought and win at Cardinal Rule before following it up the very next Tuesday with a win at Lou Dawg’s!

MOVEMENT: STEADY
David Bowie's Corporate Whores
CARDINAL RULE (7), HITCH (1)
Since we introduced The Search for the Socratic Shield, David Bowie’s Corporate Whores have been reasonably quiet! Taking a step away after their Grand Championship run in April, they did however make an appearance in June at Hitch and came in second on a high-scoring night to newcomers DePopp, but have not gained any further Golden VHS!

The Bastards
LOU DAWGS (7)
Another quiet team in the top three were The Bastards! As noted in our first Search for, Lou Dawg’s home team hadn’t been seen in competition since the Top Dawg Tournament. All that changed when they returned to add another Golden VHS to their treasure chest on June 28th, along with the Linear Championship Belt!

Lt. Dance
LOU DAWGS (4)
New to The Search for the Socratic Shield thanks to three Golden VHS victories in the last eight weeks are Lt. Dance! Statistically the third best team in the history of Lou Dawg’s, the podcasters won as The High Park Capybaras, Chip Error Please Swipe, and Where the emails@?, to storm into the rankings and immediately establish themselves as a contender by years end.

MOVEMENT: UP
5 Fast 5 Furious
HITCH (4)
Home-base teams from Hitch are at a disadvantage in this competition, admittedly, thanks to the bi-weekly schedule. That hasn’t stopped 5 Fast 5 Furious from keeping up with the field, with both an impressive score night to begin June, and a very patriot one-woman Finale as 4th of July Fast 4th of July Furious!

MOVEMENT: UP
PETE!
LOU DAWGS (4)
Ever competitive, PETE! has kept that one-man team ideal going with two VHS Championships in the last eight weeks (while also being part of two other championship teams in the form of the returning Bastards, as well as the 100th Lou Dawgs victors We H8 Brittany)! Sure, he would like to win 2016’s Socratic Shield, but he’s just as happy to win some beer.

The Electric Mayhem
CARDINAL RULE (4)
Even for a record-setting year for the team, full of personal highs as well, the Cunning Stunts (taking full advantage of there rivals time away) again widened the All-Time Golden VHS lead by mid-2016! Even a return appearance at CR#168 did not bring home further gold. However, never bet against the Mayhem. 2 - 3 - 5.

The Redacted
CARDINAL RULE (4)
Even with Fringe (support!) taking this talented team away from Trivia Club for much of July, they did prove to be the most active team in the Search for the Socratic Shield unable to take a leap forward in any way. Three tough losses, including a four point to the Unusual Suspects have kept The  Redacted steady on the lower half of the list.

MOVEMENT: DOWN
M. Night Shaym-Aliens
CARDINAL RULE (2), HITCH (1)
Speaking of productivity, it was thanks to the constant competitive spirit and smart answers of the Shaym-Aliens, through most of May and the first half of June that they were able to pick up a third Golden VHS Championship on the year. Just as has happened to The Redacted, it seems luck has not been in their favor.

Tiny Tim's...
HITCH (3)
Not to give 5 Fast 5 Furious all the Hitch glory, as Tim’s Tear Jerking Testimonial To Take To Task Tiny Tyrants added a third VHS Championship to their 2016 total three days after our first count of the year! Since then, the competition however has proved a bit too fast and a tad too furious for a fourth VHS!

Russel Harder hosts Trivia Club at Hitch (1216 Queen St East) every other MONDAY, at Lou Dawg's near Ryerson (76 Gerrard St E) every TUESDAY, and Cardinal Rule (5 Roncesvalles Ave) every WEDNESDAY!
