Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 41x08: Chris Hemsworth & Chance The Rapper

December 14, 2015

Minding the P’s and Q’s (and T's) of SNL
TRIVIA: Jon Hamm was the most recent host to appear twice on Saturday Night Live, in one calendar year, but he and Chris Hemsworth are far from the only people to do so. However, Hamm was the first in 14 years to do so, as Phil Hartman hosted twice in 1996. Alec Baldwin is also part of this esteemed group, hosting twice in 1994, the first time hosting alongside his wife (at the time) Kim Basinger (we’ll talk about co-hosts next week), and speaking of co-hosts Tom Arnold of all people, hosted twice in 1992, though the first time he hosted he ALSO hosted with his wife, Roseanne.
Two times Tom Hanks has hosted twice in the same calendar year, doing so in 1990 & 1988. Billy Crystal was not only a host twice in the same calendar year, but in the same season, when he hosted the season 9 finale in 1984 alongside four others. Bill Murray hosted twice during 1981, during a time in his career (as he noted in the SNL oral history "Live From New York") when he couldn't get arrested anywhere else. Elliot Gould hosted twice in 1980, as well as twice in 1976 during SNL’s premiere season. Dick Cavett hosted twice during 1976, as well.
A special section has to be set a side for Buck Henry and Steve Martin, however. Steve Martin hosted THREE times in the calendar year of 1978, twice during season 3, while also hosting twice during 1977. Buck Henry also hosted twice during 1977, as well as twice during 1979, and was the first person to host three times in a calendar year, doing so in 1976, which included hosting twice during season 1.
The first person to host multiple times in the same calendar year? Candice Bergen in 1975, not only during season 1 but also over the course of two months. Bergen was the first, and including Chris Hemsworth only thirteen hosts have hosted twice in the same calender year, in the forty years of Saturday Night Live.
QUALITY: The reviews were mixed on this episode, but I personally quite enjoyed what Hemsworth brought to the table, and what the episode brought forward for Hemsworth to play with. He has a physicality, and a willingness to play ball that I believe makes him much more of a Jon Hamm then a Tom Arnold, in the piece above.
QUALITY: Chance The Rapper is also an excellent musical guest, with both of his feet in the world of colaboration, humor, and energy making him a perfect fit for SNL.
PROBLEMATIC: If we're being perfectly honest, SNL still hasn't full recovered in terms of political satire, since the Trump episode. Keep the Weekend Update firing away though and we'll no doubt get somewhere someday on this, even if the show never gets back to the relevence that it once had in a post-Daily Show world.

The Ignorant Sluts continue to be the only team so far this season to gain Song Choice points on every week, an especially nice feather in the cap when only a third of the teams that chose songs this week garnered points from their choices. The Future Mrs. Randy Goldman continues to be more then an episode behind the next highest team, in points (meaning their point total this week doesn’t even match the point last week, of The Team You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With At A Party). Desolate Isle retake the lead off of the strength of Taran Killam, and an especially productive Leslie Jones.

Will Ferrall appearing in the cold open and scoring more points then any other cast member, save for Killam and McKinnon is the story of this episode to a tee. Not a lot of in-sketch points were handed out, especially not at the rate that they were last week during the Ryan Gosling-hosted episode!

The Holiday trio of episodes is not quite over, as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are CO-HOSTING on the 19th of December, before we take something akin to a month off! They'll be joined by Musical Guest Bruce Springsteen, making you wish as a Saturday Night Live Fantasy League participant that the ease of selection with Chance The Rapper and his impossibly unhelpful wikipedia was back in action! It'll be an incredibly fun episode though, no doubt.
I'm just fine if they decide to co-host everything, forever.
