Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 39x21: Andy Samberg & St. Vincent

May 18, 2014

Minding the P’s and Q’s of SNL
QUALITY: If you aren’t LISTENING to the Deep Thoughts on SNL podcast and you really should! The last episode was a hit, so jump on board! Connect to the Trivia Club Network and LISTEN to that Deep Thoughts on SNL podcast! LISTEN TO THE PODCASTSubscribe to us on iTUNES!
QUALITY: Seeing four black cast members, or former cast members, beginning the finale in the cold open with nary a white guy to be seen is a wonderful thing to see. Especially after the controversy of the season’s first half, and it was one of the better cold opens this season as well, on top of that!
PROBLEMATIC: Aside from digital shorts and dance videos, there hasn’t been a lot of strong sketches this season before the first song. It was a season, however, with half of it’s foot in the past though… so into season 40 it’ll still be trying to find itself.
PROBLEMATIC: As part of a larger problem, especially with a no doubt nostalgia dripping season ahead, the massive new cast was given a bit of room to grow but they had to do so with Wiig and especially Armisen constantly in the wings. That’s not to be said that cast members haven’t hung around after ‘leaving’ the show, but I can’t ever remember a season so full with cast members and still so heavy on returning and guesting former cast members.
QUALITY: I’m coming at this from a biased position. Because yes it has endangered the Million Dollar Bill Murray’s position atop the standings at the worst possible time. STILL I couldn’t be happier that the season could be decided with a FINALE episode, due to the properly drafted Host, by a margin of one sketch. The structure of the league is such that if and when an over inflated sketch happens you reap the rewards of the fun at hand!
PROBLEMATIC: The reaction to a STRONG Samberg episode, in reviews. I enjoyed this, and Samberg is unsurprisingly a fitting host (if not co-hosting with much of his contemporaries at times). Better then Rudd, maybe not as good as Charlize Theron, it will still an episode I enjoyed quite a bit. Let’s look at the Unofficial Season 39 Host Power Rankings, with the season finished and in the bag! Don’t agree? DISCUSS!

Now THAT was an end to the initial Saturday Night Live Fantasy League! CONGRATULATIONS of course, to THE IGNORANT SLUTS! May their patron saint Jane Curtin be smiling down on Matt! Congrats, Matt! Yes, watch both this space and the Trivia Club facebook page, for the unveiling of the Phil Hartman Trophy!

Having been in the lead for most of the season, with the Million Dollar Bill Murrays, it’s admittedly heart breaking to have lost my grasp on the trophy in the final half hour of the season, as The Ignorant Sluts take the trophy by JUST 46 points… but if I’m going to lose to anything, I’m happy it’s (in my mind) Kate McKinnon vigorously tongue kissing Paul Rudd. You can’t ask for much more, really.

McKinnon truly was his blue-chipper, his MVP of the season and really the true MVP of Saturday Night Live this season full stop. Kate made up for The Ignorant Sluts’ drafting of John Mihiser, whose late season disappearing act is worrisome for his potential to come back next season. Of course, having at least one strong Featured Cast member was necessary, as The Ignorant Sluts had just that in Beck Bennett, the ‘McKinnon’ of his rookie class, if you will! Yes, the future is bright for the SNL’s ol Velvet Fog! Another ace in the hole was of course Cecily Strong, who made up for an uneven season for being the co-host of Weekend Update, something that can not be understated thanks to it’s 50 point swing to start the season!

The Saturday Night Live Fantasy League really has gone much better then I ever hoped it would have. Hitting the ground running I was lucky to get a good handful of very interested, and especially competitive, parties together. Together we were able to enjoy friend of the League Taran Killam’s involvement (buy his comic book), I only managed to make a personal enemy out of Noel Wells, and of COURSE I’m so very happy that Rob spear-headed the Deep Thoughts on SNL podcast, getting half of the Season 39 League involved in the process!

Speaking of which, Deep Thoughts WILL continue over the summer! Not quite as regularly as the SNL schedule had us, but approximately so. You'll hear more about this on the podcast! Maybe! Though maybe next week! Exclamation! It will still be a wonderful location for comedy fans to be entertained until September when we begin the Fantasy League along with the season!

And September…
