Minding the P's
& Q's of SNL
PROBLEMATIC: Saturday
Night Live hasn’t been a deeply sincere form of comedy since… wait, even in
it’s anarchist original days, wasn’t it still a roster of almost friends,
everyone looking out for themselves? Okay, their has been sincere and honest
moments, and eras of SNL, but no more then Fallon “returning home” to where he
giggle-pussed his way to a movie career, wait slash that, Lorne-supported Late
Night stardom… shows off how craven Lorne has made the ol’ comedy institution
these days. Whether it be the commercial overall of the production, and further
wholesale of outside the proper show, Lorne going fully live and pushing Fallon
as the first host… thus supporting Fallon’s ratings fight against Colbert… and
giving us an opening monologue that is so deeply populist that it doesn’t even
try to joke but goes straight for
the fun/happy dance number… I mean, I get it, we’re putting on a variety show… but this is deeply problematic is all. I’ll stop rambling!
PROBLEMATIC: This is why Fallon
and Timberlake opening up the 40th Anniversary show with a “History
of Rap”, with ALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE, was also problematic.
QUALITY: Harry
Styles going early era Rod Stewart, was fun though.
PROBLEMATIC: Even if Jimmy was clearly more interested
in playing with Harry Styles, then working alongside the current Saturday Night
Live cast. The distance between our host and the cast at the Goodnights… was a
canyon.
PROBLEMATIC: And just one more note on a world apart…
let’s just remember this season as a shift in the core of the show. Whether it
be the all-live end to the season, or Baldwin becoming a defacto cast member
that was (so far) accurred more points then eight different cast members, but
also for the fact that due to wanting to get everything they can for a sketch…
it did not have to be either live OR from New York… really, it’s most
problematic for the tradition of the show but might become a status quo as we
move towards 50.

We’re in the closing stretch folks! It feels like I’ve been saying
this for the last couple of months, but it’s true… Jimmy Fallon for all of his
incincerity (okay, maybe I’m backlashing a bit heavily this week, I’ll warm up
I promise) he is the kind of host that is tailor made for Saturday Night Live
Fantasy League… when he isn’t singing and dancing, he’s bringing back
reoccurring characters. He isn’t here to make you think after midnight, he’s
here to PAAAAAARTY (Jimmy, we need to talk…) so with that in mind, let’s
continue to shut up and play the hits.
With a boost from Jimmy Fallon, two Groups that seemed easy to call have suddenly become much closer races in the final three episodes of the season! In the Christopher Guest Group, Go Gene Rayburn! is now within 42 points of Johnny Switchblade for the Special Guest Star Award. In our longest standing group of teams, the Phil Hartman Group, our two-time Hartman Trophy winner The Ignorant Sluts now only has a 29 point lead on reigning Trophy winner War Horse Can Dance! War Horse Can Dance also has the power of Alec Baldwin on their side, though The Ignorant Sluts themselves drafted season finale host Dwayne Johnson... this will go down to the wire!

Congrats to Lovitz Knows No Bounds of the Rocket Group for being the only person who drafted the 21st century Captain Kirk, and 21st century Malboro Man, Chris Pine! Pine will be hosting the next episode of Saturday Night Live
on May 6th with musical guests LCD Soundsystem! Otherwise known as
the favorite band of the white guy you know, especially after The Black Keys and
the Hold Steady took some time off (though has this only barely imaginary white
dude heard of Spoon? I mean, come on!),
so it should be a wonderful episode! Especially from my white dude
perspective. See, not so imaginary after all!
