Minding the P's
& Q's of SNL
QUALITY: “I’m here
to promote my movie Twilight, which this week has been on iTunes for eight
years…” When it comes to answering the question of wait,why are they host, that
was wonderfully effective.
QUALITY: Speaking of wonderfully effective, Kristen
Stewart was an ace host. Two weeks ago I had her ceiling as “likely better then
Felicity Jones” when I should have been aiming in the top five hosts/episodes
of the season! The Totino’s sketch was an excellent continuation of wonderfully
weird reoccurring concept that is seemingly infinite in its strange
possibilities. Dry Fridays was also pretty wonderful.
PROBLEMATIC: Che is
bringing down Weekend Update. And his lack of care seemed to be contagious on
this episode’s center piece, which needed to bounce back after an embarrassing Update last week. It was said best in our Deep Thoughts conversation, by Megan McKay who said, "The desk is either toothless or tone deaf."
QUALITY: The power
of SNL’s political sketches were in full bloom, and on all weeks… the night
that Kristen Stewart hosted! Unimpeachable and unexpected was Melissa McCarthy's Sean Spicer... holy shit. Never have I rewatched a sketch as many times as I did this one. Another level on details, and a testament to the wonders of coming in for a walk-on as opposed to preparing for an entire episode.

Well that was an entertaining episode! Yes, after a rough entry into 2017... Saturday Night Live continues to prove just how good it can be when it's very very good. Though this current cast still isn't hitting on the level of the generation before it, the bright spots have certainly proved it can. Especially with the right host.
Which is what makes Alec Baldwin as next week's host such an interesting choice. When he was chosen by a selection of teams at the start of the season, everyone to a team hoped that he would return to continue his all-time hostingest battle with Steve Martin! Little did any of us expect that Baldwin would become something of a defacto cast member this year, in no small part due to the apocalyptic nomination of President T-- nope, still can't say it and still won't type it. Baldwin as Trump has been great at times, who would have guessed that Tina Fey as Sarah Palin wasn't just the only casting choice... but a prescient casting choice. Bringing in friends of the show for spotlight impressions.
It's only because he's said "LIVE FROM NEW YORK...!" nine times in thirteen episodes this season, is it strange that Alec Baldwin, a man that will be hosting for the seventeenth time, is hosting at all in Season 42! I look forward to him unTrumping!
