Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 42x01: Margot Robbie & The Weeknd

Minding the P's & Q's of SNL
PROBLEMATIC: Alec
Baldwin knocking out the Donald Trump impersonation is both a highlight on SNL
this season already, while also shining a spotlight on a weak spot for Saturday
Night Live last season. They obviously weren’t prepared for Trump last year,
they needed time which as a Live comedy show they just didn’t have. Hammond was
a stop gap, and Trump as Host is still the biggest SNL mistake in recent
history. I don’t think Taran Killam’s lack of traction on his very publicized
appointment of Trump, and then quietly embarrassing loss of the character was
the main reason why the ace of Saturday Night Live didn’t return for season 42,
but it certainly proved to be the canary in the coalmine. Alec Baldwin is an
all-time Host for this show, and the trepidation that I had with Darrell
Hammond taking minutes (and points) away from current cast members in a pivitol
role is out-weighed by the fact that, like Larry David as Sanders, Saturday
Night Live is in a position to put a comedic force in a very important position
that will only prove to heighten the show comedy-wise and ratings-wise (though as The Ringer noted, this short term gain might be a loss in the long-term).
Drafting Baldwin as a Host, before the announcement, proved to be a genius
decision in retrospect for our Fantasy Leaguers.
QUALITY: Margot
Robbie is a game host for the Saturday Night Live premiere, playing into her recently appointed sex
symbol status while playing into it with such sketches as the Action 9 News
Sinkhole sketch, and also against it while playing into it with The Librarian
pre-taped short.
QUALITY: The
Librarian is likely the sketch that will stick with me more then any other,
simply because of the detail of “Haley Joel Osmet?... Haley Joel Osmet now?!” tattoos. Absurd pop culture
references are my bread and butter.
QUALITY: It didn’t prove to be all that difficult
for most participants to choose The Weeknd’s two songs, but once again The
Weeknd proved up to the spotlight! He has grown excellently from mixtape
critical darling to summer smash hit-maker to reliable pop superstar. Also, per
The Weeknd Update, he “got a hair
cut”, not a bad job for someone who can still keep that creepy, drugged up,
sexual, and predatory vibe to his jams, without it feeling all too fully
overwhelming.
PROBLEMATIC: We’ve only got twenty more episodes, give
or take, before the end of season 42! Still, it’s great to have everyone
involved in a FOURTH edition of Saturday Night Live Fantasy League! Thanks for

Can you believe that we're now FOUR SEASONS into this Saturday Night Live Fantasy League venture?! Yes, in a world where former WWE wrestler and Legend of Zelda superfan Cody Rhodes is appearing on Arrow, and where Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda is such a big fan of the podcast My Brother, My Brother, And Me that he's planning on referencing them in some way in his SNL monologue... this Saturday Night Live Fantasy League, fantasy sports for the comedy nerd, is still probably the nerdiest thing you can talk to you friends about. Because you enjoy it, and I enjoy putting it together. So, thank you for the continued support.
This League has grown year by year and now has FIFTY people involved, world-wide, which feels pretty awesome. Even more awesome, the Hartman Group was joined by three other separate groups in live drafting this pre-season! It is such an amazing trend!
Already, we know that Lin-Manuel Miranda of How I Met Your Mother (oh, and a bit of New York theatre that people seem to enjoy, called "Hamilton" which I believe is about the pig character in Teletoon's Maggie and the Ferocious Beasts) is hosting on October 8th, with musical guest Twenty One Pilots, who you can hear everytime Kevin Pillar of the Toronto Blue Jays walks up to bat. Then on October 15th, the host will be Emily Blunt! I could continue making obscure references for Emily Blunt, but suffice to say I'll simply say congrats to all those participating that where able to draft either host! Hurray!
This League has grown year by year and now has FIFTY people involved, world-wide, which feels pretty awesome. Even more awesome, the Hartman Group was joined by three other separate groups in live drafting this pre-season! It is such an amazing trend!
Already, we know that Lin-Manuel Miranda of How I Met Your Mother (oh, and a bit of New York theatre that people seem to enjoy, called "Hamilton" which I believe is about the pig character in Teletoon's Maggie and the Ferocious Beasts) is hosting on October 8th, with musical guest Twenty One Pilots, who you can hear everytime Kevin Pillar of the Toronto Blue Jays walks up to bat. Then on October 15th, the host will be Emily Blunt! I could continue making obscure references for Emily Blunt, but suffice to say I'll simply say congrats to all those participating that where able to draft either host! Hurray!
