Before we get to the wonder that is John Mulaney, and how much I enjoy his comedy, the stunt casting for Mueller and Cohen was both spot-on and also… all for a series of Meet the Parents gags that are 18 years fresher then I ever would have expected? Okee-doke. If this is as weak as the episode gets in return for media attention, that’ll be alright.

After Bill Hader got some pretty great ratings for his second hosting gig, it was John Mulaney’s turn to get ratings to get ratings akin to Hader’s first time out. And that’s cool, because even Darrell Hammond couldn’t get his name right (that was very weird, right?), but that just leaves the rest of us to enjoy this wonderful weird episode! Jack White was an excellent musical guest, and John Mulaney not only followed through on his musical introduction joke from the monologue with great aplomb, but also gave us some wonderful sketches from School Walkout, to Drag Brunch, and of course Les Lobster Special! Also,  Switcheroo couldn’t have worked with any other host, right? Megan MacKay brought this up in the Deep Thoughts chat, and I'd have to agree.

It was also pretty great to see Nasim Pedrad, and hear the two “WOO” of recognition from the audience (thanks for pointing that out Matthew S.), with the added bonus of no cast member having to put on brown face because of the still obvious week point of zero Asian representation on the cast. It’s also a fun reminder that Nasim had left SNL for Mulaney and his ill-fated sitcom that really should have worked but really did not.

We also had the finals of the Wildcard Play-In in VERSUS after a dramatic semi-finals the week before, to set the 30 Rock Page Play-Off for the final trio of episodes!

Next MONTH, on May 5th we’ll be heading towards the final trio of shows beginning with a DONALD GLOVER hosted episode! With musical guest… Childish Gambino! I do very much appreciate the fact they separated the two. That’s the kind of meta detail that I appreciated in Mulaney’s monologue. By the way, the host cast from Sterling K. Brown in episode 15 to next month’s episode 19 has been stellar! As it turns out, even Charles Barkley was a confusing if ultimately entertaining choice. Minus Franco and Kevin Hart, they’re two episodes away from capping off the season with some killer hosts. Speaking of all killer, very littler filler… The Ignorant Sluts predicted that Donald Glover would host, giving Matthew S. his fourth host of the season! If not for a strong cast, it would have been neck and neck for the reigning three-time Hartman Trophy winner, and the presumptive Hartman Trophy winner for season 43, The Party Andersons!

LAST EPISODE: CHADWICK BOSEMAN

NEXT EPISODE: DONALD GLOVER
