Oscar Confidence Pool 17/18 & RED CARPET TRIVIA at The Rec Room!

February 21, 2018

W hat a difference a year makes. If only this last year was in fact the four years that it's felt like it was. Still, it has only been about 350 some days since Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced the Best Picture winner as La La Land, before Jordan Horowitz literally took things into his own hand and rightfully gave the big award to Moonlight. In the last year, Cheryl Boone Isaacs' push for diversity during her run as Academy President has given way to a number of firsts and fifths this year, while also still making sure that John Williams got his 51st because Hollywood has got to Hollywood.

We watch movies because we love the art, we're entertained by those who are damn good at their jobs, and we watch the Oscars because we either love even the air of competition or we just love the spectacle of award shows. After a great year for movies last year, 2017 might be even better while also being wonderfully weirder, with Oscar nominations seeing a fish sex fable by monster master (and the last of the Three Amigos to get a big awards push) Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water, in the nominations lead, while also giving much deserved love to movies like Lady Bird, Mudbound, Get Out, and yes even the controversial but throughly Martin McDonagh made Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri! This might be my favorite field for an Oscar Confidence Pool yet!

What is an Oscar Confidence Pool, you might ask? It's simple enough.

  1. Picks are made in the usual manner, and then...
  2. Those picks are ranked from 24 (most confident) to 1 (least confident).
  3. The highest possible score is a wonderfully round 300 points.
The winner is the person with the most POINTS, with the number of correct picks breaking any ties. Remember, the number you write beside a category are the points you'll get if your selected winner actually wins!

This is our SIXTH ANNUAL Oscar Pool, and the fifth Oscar Confidence Pool! Saad K. was our first Oscar Pool victor in 2012/2013 with 17 correct picks! Matthew S. won the first Oscar Confidence Pool in 2013/2014 with a still unmatched 22 correct picks for 290 points! In 2014/2015 it was Oliver D. who won our third Pool with 20 correct picks for 270 points! Our reigning Oscar Confidence Pool winner is Mark P. who won in 2015/2016 with 18 correct picks for 257 points and then became our first Oscar Confidence Pool repeat winner in 2016/2017 with 17 correct picks for 242 points!

We'll also continue to test TEAMS in the Oscar Confidence Pool, as we did last year when Tiny Tim's... took our first Team Confidence Title in 2016/2017 with an average of 212 points from two individual participants! Yes, as well as an individual award, we will be awarding the TEAM with the most points! When you submit your ballot you can submit under a specific team name as well, and the TOP FIVE scores for that team will be averaged! You can also simply submit a team ballot. Trivia Club is, after all a group affair, so it seemed only fitting.

We are also proud to announce RED CARPET TRIVIA CLUB at The Rec Room! On SUNDAY before the 90th Academy Awards on MARCH 4th, we will be hosting a Red Carpet evening of Trivia which will test you on this year's slate of nominees, the movies they are in, not to mention the Oscars themselves and maybe even a little fashion! Then we'll have a final acceptance of ballots, on site, and host a LIVECAST of the Oscars on the big screen of The Hall! Join Trivia Club for the excitement and entertainment of the night!

Ballots can be submitted electronically or in person, at our Trivia Club live events where we will also have paper ballots to fill out! You can also download the PDF provided below. Best of luck, and may your confidence be the award winning key!
