Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 42x02: Lin-Manuel Miranda & Twenty One Pilots

October 09, 2016

Minding the P's & Q's of SNL
QUALITY: Lin-Manuel Miranda was a great host, which is no surprise because a live variety show is more then anything made for someone with a great theatre background. It says something that Miranda has built up such a big reputation to be not just a great get for the show this season but one of the must have hosts, soley off the strength of his musical theatre momentum! The opening monologue is one of the best in ages, and the only one in ages that needed to be a song and dance number. It’s Hamilton through the lens of a love letter to Saturday Night Live, exciting, and loving, and not without commentary on recent hosts and choices. Bravo to the middle finger to Trump as host, and well done on getting Lorne involved. Lin-Manuel might be one of the top hosts of the season, and to that I *honk, honk*... just in case he reads Fantasy League articles while he listens to podcast.
PROBLEMATIC: On only the second straight episode, of a planned four episode run to start off the season, and the episode already seemed to be running on fumes post-Update. Maybe it was the fact that Jimmy Fallon came out to mail it in (I know the man is busy, but not busy enough to be bring regressive giggling Jimmy back to SNL!), but one special guest does not an episode make, instead it was the flatter feeling riffs on The Music Man (topical!) and A Degree of Valor (no bromo?) took home heat away from a great episode and great host. Somehow this makes me more worried for Emily Blunt’s episode then it does for Tom Hanks.
QUALITY: I’m always happy when an excellent sketch feels out of place in the best possible way, and Diego Calls His Mom really hit me in the feels while making me laugh at a newcomers perspective on Americana in all it’s orange and yellow glory, not to mention an even better perspective on unspoken love. No subtitles, and little English, made it seem even more out of place and personal in the best possible way, and if the world knows any better then this short film can quietly become an SNL classic in its own right.
QUALITY: When “Ride” first played on the radio I have to admit that I didn’t really care for it. So it’s kind of shocking how much I’ve come around on Twenty One Pilots, by the time they’ve played on SNL. Certainly being Kevin Pillar’s walk-up music didn’t help by association, I can thank my partner for my Toronto Blue Jays love. Well done, Twenty One Pilots, giving me that Linkin Park by way of Blink 182 that I some how still need in my life.
QUALITY: For more of my thoughts on this episode of Saturday Night Live, join me and Brian Edwards, of the SNL Fantasy League team The Team You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With At A Party, on the Deep Thoughts on SNL podcast! Subscribe, listen, enjoy! Deep Thoughts, when they can, also tweets during the show, so join in on twitter! There's even plans to do intermittent episodes over the summer. Stay tuned!

Two episodes in a row, with the second one falling during Canada’s Thanksgiving weekend, and I already feel like I’ve fallen behind on Saturday Night Live Fantasy League a little bit! Fear not however, as we’ve instituted some time-saving measures for the Fantasy League so that when the Points Breakdown comes together it won’t do in your dear commissioner! The possibilities seem endless this season, and the field has been great so far at not only predicting the people that have hosted in these last two episodes, but also those that will host the next two episodes! Not only that, but special guest stars are handing out points at a pace that we didn’t quite see last year. Yes, you Alec Baldwin drafting teams have got yourself an extra cast member.

At least for the next two episodes.

And what a couple of episodes to look forward to! On October 15th, it will be host first-time host Emily Blunt with musical guest Bruno Mars! On October 22nd, Tom Hanks is returning for his ninth time hosting and first time in ten years! Lady Gaga will surprisingly only be a musical guest this season as well, though the guest appearance in a sketch or two is not out of question! What is in question is how Hanks didn’t have the clout to make BFF Carly Rae Jepsen his musical guest!

Standings are new to each group, as our second episode points breakdown gives an ever so slight look at the possible race for each award, trophy, gilded, and gold object of inevitable satisfaction! Remember though, we’re not even quite a tenth of a way through this Fantasy League journey and there’s still a whole lot of sketch comedy goodness to enjoy!

LAST EPISODE: MARGOT ROBBIE

NEXT EPISODE: EMILY BLUNT

We're all very excited!
