Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 41x03: Tracy Morgan & Demi Lovato

October 18, 2015

Minding the P’s and Q’s of SNL
QUALITY: Enjoy our Deep Thoughts on SNL podcast! Subscribe, listen, enjoy! And heck, join in if you feel so inclined, through twitter!
QUALITY: What an emotional homecoming for Tracy Morgan, just as you knew it would be! 30 Rock reunion! Brian Fellow! Spaceman Jones! Yes, even Woodrow there to teach Willie the life lessons that helped a guy who lives under a bridge nab the likes of Kate Hudson and Britney Spears.
QUALITY: You’ve heard it everywhere in the last couple of days of course, by Larry David is an inspired casting choice for the shockingly effective Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. Which also buries the lead on the fact that Alec Baldwin put in multiple appearances on the show, and reprised good ol’ Jack for a hot second.
PROBLEMATIC: Speaking of candidates, all the Canadians who read this or take part in the Fantasy League, or listen to the Deep Thoughts podcast, remember that MONDAY is your time to vote! Go to elections.ca to make sure you’re ready to vote! It doesn’t matter whom you vote for, as long as you vote. Ensure that you have everything you need to choose the representation that you want! MONDAY 9:30am to 9:30pm.
QUALITY: For those who might be curious, the technology is available to keep track of individual totals, for each cast member this season. As we head into the first break of the season the Top Five Points Getters, using our completely unscientific and barely mathematical SNL Fantasy League points system: 1) Taran Killam, 2) Kate McKinnon, 3) Kenan Thompson, 4) Kyle Mooney, 5) Vanessa Bayer! No other cast member has totaled over 100 points so far this season.
PROBLEMATIC: The second musical guest crying during their second song, in three episodes, is an awkward spotlight on the cloying nature of pop music. I understand that they’re Disney kids first, and so a bit of dramatic stage craft is in their blood… but I don’t have to like it, for it’s inherit insincerity masquerading as the opposite. Demi Lovato DID impress though with her ability to sing, even if it isn’t my bag of tricks.
QUALITY: This is the best episode so far this year, I mean how could it not be? It’s a call back to the second Golden Age of the show, in the late 90’s and early 2000’s (or, you know, the era that I grew up watching)… and Tracy Morgan will be a tough sentimental favorite to beat in the Host Unofficial Power Rankings, this season.

Something that helped them jump from eighth to third overall. Though The Not Ready For First Place Players have scored less points each episode, for the first three episodes, the drop each episode has been minimal, and the teams consistency has been it's key for the top score so far in this Chase for the Hartman Trophy! Though Billion Dollar Murrays are still in second, though entire Group has gotten closer, proving that things could very well shift next episode.

Druncle is the first team in the Farley Group, and the Saturday Night Live Fantasy League at large, to top the episode scoreboard TWICE, but they are tied with Effie Villalopolus' Professional Complainers for the top spot in the Group tanks to another high scoring episode from the E.V.P.C. and an appearance from Tina Fey this week! Of the four teams that didn’t make Song Choices, three of those teams were in the Farley Group, which is your least important fact of the week! Speaking of Song Choices though, Miss Swan’s Lowered Expectations made a second consecutive first/second correct pick-up!

The Night Crawlerz grab the highest score of the season so far, overall, with help from being a six-team Group, but also by drafting not only Tina Fey but also Alec Baldwin in the Prospectus Host Draft! In fact, The Night Crawlerz have more points then Total Bastard Airlines and Crisis of Conformity combined! It's the kind of episode that has pushed The Night Crawlerz into a commanding lead in the Belushi Group after the first trio of episodes, while becoming the first team past the 500 mark. “Cool for the Summer” was the two points that Nuni and the Hair Chair needed to pass Harry Caray’s BBQ Moon Ribs in this episode’s point standings. Crisis of Conformity dips from third to sixth, with 60 less points then last week, while they’re opposition more or less all improved or kept stable.

The one-two punch of Killam and McKinnon has finally paid off for Haders to the Left, who top the Poehler Group scores on this episode. The battle continues between Haders to the Left, and Heather From Work, as the big week also brings Haders to the Left into first place overall in the Poehler Group as well. Lazy Sunfeys are helped by a Tina Fey appearance, as well as a strong night from Kenan Thompson alongside Tracy Morgan, to jump from fifth to third place overall in the Poehler Group!

What a difference three weeks make! Though we won’t be able to set our watch to the points that were collected in the premiere trio of shows to start Season 41, it might become a good representation of things to come! Of course, don’t rule out the course corrections, cast introductions, or late season surges that could change the outcome of any one of our six groups!

It’ll be THREE WEEKS until Donald Trump (probably) hosts SNL (ugh), with Musical Guest SIA! Also, let The Ignorant Sluts’ Matthew Smith be the first to make this joke, “Sia is so embarrassed to be on the same episode as Donald Trump she's refusing to even show her face.”

At least 10 years ago, it was just a vaguely ridiculous idea...
