Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 42x21: Dwayne Johnson & Katy Perry

May 22, 2017

Minding the P's & Q's of SNL
QUALITY: This was another well hosted episode from an ace host. It’s wonderful that, like Drake more recently, The Rock has transitioned quite wonderfully from a “Better then I thought they’d be…” host seventeen years ago, and in the process of taking over the entertainment industry, becoming the highest paid movie star in the world and the Sexiest Man Alive, is now also a member of SNL’s Five Timers Club.
QUALITY: One of THREE new members of the Five Timers Club this season. The first time more then two people have entered the Club in a single year. With Scarlett Johansson’s appearance in the cold open, they all appeared in these last two episodes of Season 42 as well! With the sudden influx of members to the Five Timers Club, you might be wondering who else is on the cusp? Glad you asked!
PROBLEMATIC: Four Timers Club members, and potential hosts for Season 43, natch: Tom Arnold (wait, what?) and Lindsey Lohan (oh, I see why this is problematic…), Jonah Hill (better?),  Louis C.K. (see that’s better!), and potentially more but I’ll stop it at that.
PROBLEMATIC: Dr. Horrible will be VERY disappointed that he missed out on that International Mad Scientist Society mixer.
QUALITY: Wait no, never mind, he will NOT be disappointed… and neither will White Castle, with their ad dollars put to such good use!
QUALITY/ PROBLEMATIC: I would love to talk more about this particular episode, but this being the end of the year I need to check on a few things before we reveal this years Group CHAMPS, the League Awards, and a final thank you! It’s been a weird year this Season 42. The writers have certainly kept Saturday Night Live sketch comedy weird, even during a year were the capitalistic side of Lorne’s ship has never been more evident and craven to a Jimmy Fallon-shaded degree. This gives an added platform to those on the show, certainly, and Weekend Update is officially Ready For Weekday Primetime… but with heat-seaking casting choses that go above and beyond the cast themselves… Kate McKinnon is your star, that goes without saying, but the remaining cast (none of which have nearly the same heat as McKinnon) are helped when the press and push are placed on McCartney, Larry David, and of course Donald Trump. It makes  certain celebrities a Greek chorus of chirps for certain roles, as opposed to think pieces dream casting… within the cast! It also leads to an end of an era, with Bobby Moynihan and Vannessa Bayer leaving the show.
QUALITY: Bayer and Moynihan have also felt like the NICEST PEOPLE, so I’m both happy to see them move on to more diverse projects, but sad that such GLUE PEOPLE are being lost within the cast. This will of course give the next generation a chance to be that glue that the show needs. I will also say for Sasheer Zamata, she always felt underused, the kind of nerd who I’m very excited to see the next step from. With those cast members gone, will anyone else leave in the off season? Best money has either Pete Davidson or Leslie Jones moving on, in my mind, to bigger projects or different directions in their careers. I wouldn’t be shocked if either or both aren’t part of the cast in Season 43. I also wouldn’t be shocked if Mikey Day graduates into the Rep Cast as well for SNL43, as he’s already picked up the slack that Killam left, that Beck Bennett of course didn’t grab and run with.

Alec Baldwin will be available to be drafted as a Cast member next year, if he stays on as Donald Trump. You heard it hear first. The impact he had as a drafted Host in Season 42 is unquestionable, as you’ll see. With 699 points across 16 guest appearances, and an official hosting gig, Alec Baldwin gained more points over the course Season 42 then Kyle Mooney (698 points),  Kenan Thompson (694),  Alex Moffat (687), Aidy Bryant (681),  Bobby Moynihan (668), Leslie Jones (564),  Sasheer Zamata (507),  Melissa Villasenor (436), and Pete Davidson (359). Yes, even with the thing margin over Money and Thompson, that makes Baldwin the sixth most valuable CAST MEMBER of the past year.

Kate McKinnon is of course the blue chipper of the season, gaining more then 1,000 points for her teams, though she was more alone in this plateau as Beck Bennett had a breakout season as the new male lead of Saturday Night Live, and also gained more then 1,000 points in the over the season making him the second most valuable cast member for Season 42.

One more interesting statistic (for yours truly, at least) the only cast member to gain more 100 points in a single episode… was Bobby Moynihan with his 109 points in the Finale episode! With himself and a top five cast member for SNL 42, Vanessa Bayer, leaving at the end of the year, it will no doubt be interesting to see how new cast members change the shape of our Saturday Night Live Fantasy League.

Powered by a veritable fourth cast member, in Alec Baldwin, not only did War Horse Can Dance finish in the top-two of the Hartman Group for the second straight season but the team also gained the Baldwin & Martin Award in the Hartman Group with 948 host points, over Alec Baldwin’s hosted episode and 16 guest appearances, along with host points from Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jimmy Fallon, and two separate guest appearances by Tina Fey. The Baldwin & Martin Award was perfectly named for this second year of its official awarding, because if you weren’t lucky enough to pick-up Alec Baldwin in the Host draft then you probably didn’t win at least THAT award in either your Group or Overall.  And within the Group, it was a VERY GOOD YEAR for picking hosts, with all teams picking up Host points from the draft, with five of the seven teams picking two hosts over the course of the season and the other two teams picking at least two guest appearances!

The Bufallo Bill Murrays picked up the G.E. Smith Award in the Hartman Group with 171 Song Choice points, including 15 first songs, 8 second songs, and 30 songs correctly chosen overall. The Eddie Murphy Award was shared, in the Hartman Group, by the two teams that you would expect… with both teams gaining the episode topping high score on five separate occasions each, War Horse Can Dance and The Ignorant Sluts (who themselves got the top score in the premiere AND the finale, but more on THAT in a sec).

The Ignorant Sluts had been in the lead position for most of the season, after weathering an early battle for the top spot of the Hartman Group against Holtzwomenn, the combined momentum of both Kate McKinnon and Beck Bennett proved as fruitful as The Ignorant Sluts had hoped. McKinnon and Bennett were of course members of the first two Hartman Trophy winning teams, as part of The Ignorant Sluts, before they were dethroned by War Horse Can Dance in Season 41. So it would be poetic that the reigning Hartman Trophy winner War Horse Can Dance would make the late season surge towards the top spot, taking the position for themselves a week before the Season Finale without Kate McKinnon on their team (just as they didn’t have her last season) but with Alec Baldwin adding the needed fire to War Horse Can Dance’s push towards the top.

Though The Ignorant Sluts had drafted not one, but three hosts, up until the Finale… it was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson that was needed to truly bring them to potentially become THREE-TIME Hartman Trophy winners! As it should, it all came down to the Season Finale!

Our second longest running Group within the Saturday Night Live Fantasy League, home to a host of participants playing in their third season saw one team rock Season 42 and throw the competitive balance out the window for a second straight year. And they didn’t even need Kate McKinnon to do it. Winning the G.E. If you think Night CrawlerZ’s Belushi Group victory from Season 41 was impressive, next to the Sword of Destiny on his book shelf will now be the Gilded Radner!

Following in the tradition of the Hartman Trophy and the Gilded Radner, it was great to see the Weekend Warrior Award continue as the newest returning Group Award! Hurray tradition! The Poehler Group were competitive with their Song Choices, and largely consistent along the board with Jones’n For A Good Time taking the group’s G.E. Smith Award for Song Choices! In the last five episodes of the season, the Lazy Sunfeys would not only lock down the Eddie Murphy and Baldwin & Martin Award within the group they would also…

The Christopher Guest Group were another strong Song Choice group, with only two people gaining less then 100 points in Song Choices this year, and the Overall winner coming from the Group as well! SPOILERS! Wookin’ Pa Nub grabbed the Baldwin & Martin Host Points award, with the Alec Baldwin points they received this year capped off with Dwayne Johnson as host that boosted them all the way to third! That one-two punch also gave them the Eddie Murphy Award within the Group as well,  though eeeeveryone in the Group led an episode at least once this season! More then any other Group, the Guest Group has proven the most balanced and competitive in Season 42. Ultimately, the closest race of the season was not in the Hartman Group, but amongst another live-drafting group of friends with NINETEEN POINTS the closest finish in Saturday Night Live Fantasy League history!

Skanky Little Prostitutes, the Gilded Radner winners from Season 41 picked up the G.E. Smith Award within the Hudson Group for Season 42, with Not A Strong Swimmer close behind with 144 points. Not A Strong Swimmer is a strong runner-up in a number of cases, within the Yvonne Hudson Group,  no less then for the Eddie Murphy Award… which saw The Weekenders break the tie for the win in the Season Finale, which also saw them continue to take big steps forward in the Baldwin & Martin Award, even with zero (yep, ZERO) Song Choice points! Without those Host points, The Weekenders would have finished in LAST place in their Group, but with those 1, 119 host points…

The Louis-Dreyfuss Group was home to the most diverse Group of participants, with players in their fourth thru first year of participation… but ultimately it came down to one team, and like with the Radner Group, it was decided early. The biggest drama was for the G.E. Smith Award, which saw Kristen Wiig In A Box take the Group prize… while more then 500 points ahead, boosted by a Baldwin & Martin Award winning, Eddie Murphy Award leading kind of year… last year’s runner-up for the Wayne’s World Championship, but this years Very Exceptional Entertainment Prize winner…

Our fourth live draft of the season, missing out on Alec Baldwin points as well, was the Rocket Group! Originally it looked like a battle between Lovitz Knows No Bounds, @TheRealLindseyBuckingham, and A One-Dimensional Female Character From A Male Driven Comedy, even with early and often Host points from Scrumtrelescent that would eventually see the team take the Baldwin & Martin Award for the Group, while Blizzard Man did not gain any Host points throughout the season but put in the work on the Song Choice side of things to grab 148 Song Choice points, the G.E. Smith Award for the Group,  and sixth place Overall in the League! Ultimately though it would not be any of these teams who would hold out and win it all, taking the Eddie Murphy Award for the Group along the way…

With that, another season of the Saturday Night Live Fantasy League comes to an end along-side Season 42 of Saturday Night Live! Thank you all once again for joining in on this wild thought experiment that has grown into a real stat monster, and a weird and wonderful spin on the SNL experience.

Jimmy Fallon was the highest scoring Host this past season, with 124 points to his name in that episode. Highest scoring, of course, if you don't count the accumulated might of Alec Baldwin this season in a move on Lorne's part that truly threatened to break the game. I really have not build it for celebrity casting. Phew! As noted above, Bobby Moynihan had the single episode high score for a cast member with 109 points in the finale. Which, I am of course, a fan of. Kate McKinnon is still the blue chip of Saturday Night Live to no surprise, the MVP for Season 42, while Beck Bennett matched early expectations by notching more points overall this season then friend of the League, Taran Killam did last season!

Congratulations one final time to the now three-time Hartman Trophy winner The Ignorant Sluts, Gilded Radner and Eddie Murphy Award winner The Night CrawlerZ, Weekend Warrior Award holding Lazy Sunfeys, Special Guest Star Go Gene Rayburn!, Yvonne Hudsucker Proxy and Baldwin & Martin Award winners The Weekenders, V.E.E.P. winners Dan Akroyd Rage, Golden Rocket Man awardees El Nino, and G.E. Smith Award winners I Know Why The Caged Bird Laughs!

It's been a pleasure to see everyone who participated this year take some added joy out of watching the premiere sketch comedy institution on television! Thank you to the cast and crew of SNL, thank you to the hosts, to the musical guests, but yes thank you to you! You live-drafted for the first time outside of the initial Hartman Group, and it made me think that this might just out last my involvement in the Fantasy League on day. But that won't be tomorrow. I'm still your commissioner, Russel Harder, and I'll see you for Season 43! For the FIFTH SEASON of our Saturday Night Live Fantasy, and for the fourth, third, second, and even first season for others. We're building a Five Timers Club, one season at a time. Until then, we'll keep chatting Saturday Night Live, and the Fantasy League, on the ever-growing Facebook group!

LAST EPISODE: MELISSA McCARTHY
