Minding the P's
& Q's of SNL
QUALITY: As a
Groundlings alum it’s always to see what Melissa McCarthy brings to Saturday
Night Live, and riding the wave of her Sean Spicer appearances through this
season, the writers boosted her FIFTH appearance with the kind of broad humor
and energy that McCarthy nails with aplomb. From the monologue on to a truly
unsettling 10 to 1 sketch. Chappelle may be the best episode of the season due
to the true once in a lifetime feel of it… but McCarthy as an ace also gives us
one of the best episodes of the season.
QUALITY/PROBLEMATIC: It was a
strong night for the Weekend Update anchors, and not just because Che opened
the show alongside Alec Baldwin, or because Colin Jost was STILL recovering
being shot in the leg during Goodnights (either that, or is in fact injured)
which pings every continuity heart string… it was just a solid Update, guests
certainly not included (Pete was doing good work but not great, and Cecily’s
Cathy Anne is still her worst Update character after a lot of good to great
bits)!
QUALITY: With the
goodnights it was fun to see Melissa McCarthy and even Haim totally taken aback
by a wild Steve Martin appearing, while the SNL cast is soooo unfazed. How
often do we get surprises during the Goodnights?! Believe me, it took a while
to figure it out points-wise. And if I don’t have points for it at this point,
it’s a rarity. We treated it with the same weight of the opening monologue,
since it happens on the same stage but because literally everyone is on the
stage no further points were given other then to Martin.

looks to be, really the opposite of a Fred Armisen & Courtnery Barnett
finale, no offence to either indy darling. Alec Baldwin will be playing Trump
at least one more time as well, in what has been a truly unexpected season.
We’ll see you NEXT WEEK! Not only will every Group Award be officially
announced, but we’ll be celebrating the Eddie Murphy Award winner for Leader of
the Pack, the Baldwin & Martin Award for Most with the Host, and the G.E.
Smith Award for Musical Guest Excellence! All three awards will get a nod in
each individual Group, while also being shared OVERALL, for the second time
League-wide!
