Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 42x11: Felicity Jones & Sturgill Simpson

Minding the P's & Q's of SNL
QUALITY: It IS
good to be back into things, after the winter break! We’re officially on the
back half of Season 42, and with that our fourth season of Saturday Night Live
Fantasy League! It’s been a season unlike any other, and I’m excited to see how
it closes out and what we’ll be able to do to build off of it for our fifth go
around! But I’m getting ahead of myself… thoughts on episode ELEVEN!
PROBLEMATIC: When the
first headline that pops up for your episode, when googling SNL, ends up being
“Is Felicity Jones funny?”, well I don’t like your chances in terms of coming
back to host again. I’ve always liked her more as an actor then, say, Eddie Redmayne (whose character in
Fantastic Beasts is simply quieter then his character in Jupiter Ascending, but
no less “nuanced”), but she’s still the Emma Stone to Redmayne’s Ryan Gosling. What
I’m saying is, it was a broken “if then” from the start, that I was trying
there. A nervously delivered monologue doesn’t take away from the fact that I
really enjoyed “Like Crazy”. Though also… being the lead in a major IP also
doesn’t make you a movie star.
PROBLEMATIC: Speaking
of, “Wait, who is this?”, Sturgill,
can I call you Sturg? We make song choices, and it’s Brian’s birthday, so we
make some fun song choices and it would help (especially on a flat return from
a holiday break kind of episode) that you make either one, not even both, just
ONE of your singles from your new record a song choice! I know you’re very cool
and all, with the Sailor motif on the album, and being a country singer who
also somehow looks like Rip Hunter from
the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, but you’re killing me Sturg!
PROBLEMATIC: Wait,
Tina Fey is right. Tina Fey is always right. I need to calm down, stop reviewing, and get to breaking
down points!
QUALITY: But yes, on the "Who Are THEY?!" narrative that I had fun with above, that's part of this returning episode. They're obviously people that SNL thinks we will enjoy. Whether the personal taste of the producers, or someone that they think will help with ratings, or just someone that they think to be honestly talented and funny... who is chosen as host and musical guest is nothing if not a snap shot of the year in pop culture, and it has been that way for forty-two years.

Let's call that an unsuccesful episode, not the greatest first step on entrances to 2017 but a good step to those who drafted Felicity Jones! On passing the half-way mark to season 42, the Fantasy League is looking like it's solidifying all the more with single shifts in place and a few close races but only one or two for fist place in a Group, at the moment!
Fear not though, because Aziz Ansari is finally hosting NEXT SATURDAY! Yes, on January 21st, I say finally because he has been hope of us all who have drafted prospective hosts and his excellent Netflix show Master of None has finally opened the door for him! A wonderful sign for Donald Glover draft picks, if not this season then next. Yes, Aziz is joined by Big Sean as Musical Guest, making it a full polar opposite pairing of this week's episode!
