Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 40x02: Sarah Silverman & Maroon 5

October 05, 2014

Minding the P’s and Q’s of SNL
QUALITY: DTJ – Down To Jehad! It’s your new favorite acronym.
QUALITY: Live From New York… it’s LINDSEY! Honestly, it was an excellent monologue and this put the LIVE in the Saturday Night Live. Bravo.
PROBLEMATIC: MIKE O’BRIEN SIGHTING! Meaning, yes, he got more screen time tonight then Pete Davidson. We don’t have the Tim Robinson Rule for nothin’!
QUALITY: The Isolated Archipelago's Rob on Adam Levin’s outfit choice: “He's dressed like off-brand K-Mart Star-Lord.”
QUALITY: The Triple Club. “Because after you eat it, you’ll take a leeegendary number two.”
PROBLEMATIC: The Airport Pickup sketch had a hell of a good start, but literally had no end. It just had an endorsement for Pizza Hut.
QUALITY: Sarah Silverman backing away from the Maroon 5 that surround her, to give Beck a hug! Yeah! By the way, the Zapruder Film like detail, looking at angles and dress shirt patterns, that the Featured League chat went into to ascertain this was… wonderful.
PROBLEMATIC: After a big debut last week, there was NOTHING to be done with Pete Davidson, sadly. Bayer, Bryant, Pharoah, and Moynihan were also underused to a lesser extent.

Silverman, on her return to SNL, had quite a strong hosting night, and is probably the best of the season so far in this small hosting sample of quality hosts. The opening monologue was possibly the best one since Louis C.K. last season, showing the strength of a stand-up in a situation like this, and Silverman was game in sketches, showing respect to Joan Rivers in a brave sketch that fell flat but had it’s heart in the right place.

It was a low-scoring week points-wise, across the board, proving to shake up the standings and condense the standings as a whole, while also taking away from the leading teams in both the Repertory and Featured Leagues. More then anything, the lower point totals showed the importance of Song Choices! Next week, with Bill Hader hosting, the Ignorant Sluts could certainly jump from fifth to first, but until them just one point separates the reigning Phil Hartman Trophy winner and the second place team from the first week, Keyrock, Khan, & Associates (the only team, not to make a song choice this week, actually). Also making a big jump, though trending in the forward direction, could the Not Ready For First Place Players make up even MORE ground on our first place Team You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With At A Party?

Tune in next week, as I noted above the host is recent SNL alumni Bill Hader making his hosting debut, continuing this celebratory 40th season! Congrats to the Ignorant Sluts for picking him, let’s see if the last generation of SNL cast member jackpot strikes twices (yeah, I know, horrible analogy) and Hader brings the wealth of points that Samberg brought the Sluts last year in a time of need! Joining Hader will be musical guest Hoser—er, Hozier. Eh.

We're all very excited, hoping to see Mrs. Seth Myers.
