Minding the P’s and Q’s of SNL

PROBLEMATIC: This will be another shorter edition of P’s and Q’s, but ultimately this is what we’re looking at with Jonah Hill on his fourth hosting stint (yes, one step away from the Five Timers Club, he’s this generation of Elliot Gould, ladies and gents) is that it reminds you of the kind of Host and the kind of actor that Jonah Hill seems to be. Self-effacing, a sincerely nice guy, who that also tries hard enough to come off as gratingly fake at times. He didn’t pick his character in This Is The End out of a hat. I feel like Jonah Hill would have been an A-plus cast member on the show, living somewhere between Killam and Moynihan, if he hadn’t connected with Apatow and the gang! The episode took more chances overall then any other this season, but it didn’t mean those chances paid off.

QUALITY: Future is incredibly likable, no? Maybe it’s the association with OVO that gives me the bias, but even his helping Jonah Hill give a different spin to the ol’ Musical Monologue was a nice touch. Sorry though, Jumpman being in the possible won’t get you Song Choice points, League members! The precident was actually set by Kanye West last episode, if a song happens in a non-Musical Guest section such as “I Love Kanye” off of Life of Pablo being Kanye’s “freestyle”, then it doesn’t count as a Song Choice! Soooo close though.

So yes, a weird night with a handful of stand-out moments and multiple looks into specific American culture, also put Beck Bennett onto the same level of Taran Killam for an episode! This helped make some Group races closer, while also blowing the doors off of others! Still, we have as many as seven episode remaining in Season 41, with next week’s episode featuring Host AND Musical Guest AND noted enjoyer of donuts Ariana Grande! Congrats to War Horse Can Dance and Skanky Little Prostitutes on their Host choices!

You might have also noticed a lack of Song Choices across the board this week, and yes your noted commissioner was unable to remind the League to hand them in on time so just a reminder going forward that Song Choices for any Musical Guest, such as Grande on March 12^th, will be due by 11:30pm EST on the night of the show! Once we go “live”, the clock has run out on those extra points!
