Saturday Night Live Fantasy League: Episode 41x01: Miley Cyrus

October 05, 2015

Minding the P’s and Q’s of SNL
PROBLEMATIC: We’re back already, and I didn’t even prepare a speech! Wait, don’t worry that will be ready shortly (the speech, I mean) and it will be readily linked alongside the Draft Results and Scoring System, so that you’re able to see who has whom, and how they’re going to win the SNL Fantasy League with them!
QUALITY: Enjoy our Deep Thoughts on SNL podcast! Subscribe, listen, enjoy! And heck, join in if you feel so inclined, through twitter!
PROBLEMATIC: For those who hate change, our new expanded League with six groups and FORTY TEAMS, means that the lay-out below has changed. You’ll just have to get used to it.
QUALITY: Miley Cyrus was game as host, and as a now three-time host that should come as no surprise. Saturday Night Live is always best with a little lead-time, so with an entire summer to work things out (give or take the newly hired) Cyrus was also supported by the writing. I’ll leave any opinons on the musical side of things on the side, except to say that Miley Cyrus is really loving the shit outta drugs right now.
QUALITY: Jon Rudnitsky is fitting in perfectly, one episode in. Better actor then Pete Davidson or Leslie Jones were last year, and having a less of an outwardly identifiable personality ala Davidson and Jones, also allows Rudnitsky to take some of the weight from Killam’s workhorse schedule, now that the latter his responsible for the Trump impression.
QUALITY: Which is the other talking point, isn’t it? Kate McKinnon gets the sneaker-upper, along-side Hilary… so Killam’s Trump gets the Cold Open! And Killam does an able job that is 50% voice-work and 50% hair and make-up.
PROBLEMATIC: Just when you thought we didn’t have to talk about Weekend Update, Colin Jost has decided to steer hard into ugly white privilege, and Michael Che is looking like he doesn’t really want to be there… and it’s the first episode back! Let’s level our expectations away from the desk era that started with Fey and Fallon, remembering that at least this isn’t Colin Quinn (who was wonderful in Trainwreck, by the way)!

A balanced team is important, but as will likely be a theme through the season so is an ace on the team. McKinnon and Killam proved as important as ever this week, but it was points from the likes of Bennett and newcomer Rudnitsky that helped specific teams reach the top of the standings in the season premiere.

Spoiler warning: the ONLY team to get a correct Song Choice was the two-time reigning Phil Hartman Trophy winner The Ignorant Sluts, pulling “Karen Don’t Be Sad” out of the either for five points! When reached for comment about how he figured out the mind of Miley Cyrus, a mind that had stumped the three-quarters of the League that had sifted through Miley’s Soundcloud album, Matthew Smith was quoted as saying, “Apparently she announced she was doing that song.”

A likely story! We’ll figure out your dark arts yet!

Some of you might have been waiting to talk about the fact that yes, this year’s 1B cast draft pick, Taran Killam, was picked not once but twice in the SECOND round in the Poehler Group! Any surprise that those two teams are one and two? That’s debatable, but the biggest surprise from this commish’s perspective is that the team with both McKinnon AND Killam didn’t get the top score of the week! Heather From Work leads the, at first glance; more front-loaded Haders To The Left by five points! It’s a long season, however, so we’ll have to see how this all shakes out!

Amy Schumer hosts NEXT WEEK, October 10th, with Musical Guest The Weeknd! All respect to Miley Cyrus, but the season premiere to Season 41 is NEXT WEEK! We just got the Miley Cyrus episode a month earlier then we should have. Schumer is coming off a summer that has made her the hottest name in comedy (this side of John Oliver), while The Weeknd is responsible for the Song of the Summer and that’s not simply bias from #the6, either.

It's the freakin' Weeknd, baby we're gonna have us some fun!
